THE CITY OF ROSTOCK PLANTS A TREE ON THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE

On the International Day of Peace, which is celebrated on 21 September, the City of Rostock has planted a linden tree in the memorial park of St. Jacob´s Church. The tree, being a symbol of peace, was planted in the presence of the President of the City Council Mrs. Regine Lück and the Senator for Construction and Environment Mr. Holger Matthäus. The green park situated in the middle of the city is the place where the famous gothic church of St. Jacob´s was destroyed in the Second World War. Today it stands as a symbol of peace and a reminder of how important it is to preserve peace and to reach out to each other regardless of faith, race and political beliefs.

Prior the planting the tree, all participants of the event, among which also school children, representatives of different religious denominations and associations, wrote their peace messages which they attached to the tree. These messages will remain in thought and for visitors to read them and to remember them. To make sure that these messages reach out enough people, white pigeons were released in the air giving this event even more importance and festivity.

After the event, at 4.pm. an ecumenical and interreligious service was held at St. Mary´s church which started with symbolic bell ringing. All residents and guests of Rostock were cordially invited to attend the service.

The City of Rostock has been member of the International Association of Peace Messenger City since 2017 and it makes effort every year to celebrate this day.
